I'm looking at the EBNF grammar of XML 1.0 at www.w3.org and it brings up a question. The XML specification doesn't allow for whitespace in several places. For example, this is not legal in a start tag. . . V < termdef > And these are not legal in an end tag. . . . . V V < / termdef > Why is this? Attributes allow whitespace. This is legal. . . . . . . . . . . V V V V V <termdef usename = " foobar1 " > Why is whitespace allowed sometimes and other times not? xml-dev: A list for W3C XML Developers.
