The more we discuss these issues, the more I think that SAX shouldn't try to be all things to all people -- perhaps we should let the 'S' continue to stand for 'Simple', and target only the 80% (or 98%, more likely) who care mainly about the Holy Trinity of elements, attributes, and character data.
