XSchema and DTDs

XSchema and DTDs
I don't understand why there is both DTD and XSchema. Will XSchema
eventually replace DTD or will both be used interchangeably? So far I only
know of one XML parser that understands both: IE5b2. Are there more? Any
open source parsers? Is MS's implementation compliant with the XSchema std?

Why I want to know. I'm developing two independant XML languages: XRL
(eXtensible Revision Language) for interchange of source code control like
information on the web, and an XML <-> APAA (Automotive Parts Aftermarket
Associate) mapping to exchange car parts catalog information in a biz2biz
eCommerce setting. So for both of these I need to create a DTD or an
XSchema. Which one would be more long term? Or do I need to do both.

On the last point, can't XSL format a XSchema into DTD?
