Sure.  Size is undoubtably important in many cases.  In some circumstances,
however, it may be a reasonable trade-off to allow a modem to compress a
file rather than spending server cycles on a generic compression such as
GZIP.

That was the VRML answer too during the VRML 97 design effor, Andrew,
and darned if everyone is still not trying to find ways to make the
files smaller.  

Apparently, every byte is sacred.
