1. Please could we retain the convenient
public String getValue (String name);

2. I thought the consensus was that getType should return an integer,
possibly a bit-significant set of flags?

At present this all leaves me rather cold because no-one has yet convinced
me of the value of using these XML facilities versus simple
application-level conventions like <IMAGE FILE="abc.jpeg"/>. I'm open to
persuasion; but if we need to provide these things, we must make sure they
do not add overhead for users who don't think they need to use them.
