The Case for XQuery

The Case for XQuery

XML use is widespread across modern information systems in all industry, government, and academic sectors. The core technologies for processing XML (XML, XSLT, XPath, XML Schema, and others) are maturing steadily - thanks to support from standards bodies like the W3C and OASIS, and from major industry players such as IBM, Microsoft, and Oracle. XML is also the basis for a growing body of industry standards for data exchange, and it is well on its way to becoming a mainstream technology for data integration. XML is transforming not just data - it is transforming information processing in general.

Question What You Read—With XQuery

EContent Magazine Columnist Robert J. Boeri reports: "I asked the same question of representatives at Data Direct, a subsidiary of Progress Software (which developed Stylus Studio software and Data Direct's XQuery for Java). Larry Kim, XML product manager at Data Direct, demonstrated how to use Stylus Studio's XQuery to analyze CSV Web logs and ferret out the name of a site and its users trying to access a Web server. Larry also pointed out that not only was XQuery a very compact language, but it could be applied to groups of XML files, different from the usual file-at-a-time orientation of other XML standards. Jonathan Robie, Data Direct's XML program manager and editor of several XQuery-related standards at the W3C, repeated this theme."

Larkware Reviews Stylus Studio® 6 XML Professional Edition

LarkWare's Mike Gunderloy says: "I'm with those who want an XML IDE, a program that actually understands more about the XML technologies than I do, and that helps keep me from making too many terribly boneheaded mistakes. Stylus Studio® is a darned good example of such an IDE, and if you work extensively with XML you may find that it's just what you need to enhance your productivity immensely."

XML/Web Services Journal Reviews Stylus Studio® 6 XML Professional Edition, Release 2 - "An Integrated Tool with Breadth"

Sys-Con's XML/Web Services Journal Reporter - Brian Barbash Says: "XML Development - the term can mean many different things given the technologies currently available. At the center of it all is XML Schemas, DTDs and instance documents. Building out from the base there's XSL, Web Services and XQuery just to name a few. Because of this, it's not uncommon for a developer to have several tools, each specialized in one of those technologies. Stylus Studio®, however, provides an integrated environment for XML development with broad support for the various technologies. This review covers its capabilities in some of the major areas."

Stylus Studio® Takes a Big Step

Stylus Studio® Takes a Big Step

EWeek's Jim Rapoza says: Stylus Studio® 6 XML Professional Edition Release 2 adds compelling new features to the already very good XML and Web services editor...

One of the most useful new features in Stylus Studio® 6 Release 2 is the inclusion of solid visual editing capabilities for XML schema files. Using this feature, it was much easier to edit and create a large and complex XML schema. Also welcome was the ability to use the Convert to XML feature to convert EDI files into XML formats. This worked fairly cleanly and proved to be a simple process for anyone who has mapped legacy data formats into XML.

XQuery's Impact on the Fiancial Industry

The coming year will bring many new developments to XQuery, the highly anticipated language for querying and creating XML documents, that will ultimately lead to a complete overhaul in the way banking software applications are built. Primarily queried from relational databases, business-critical data is increasingly required to be exchanged and processed as either XML data, or a combination of XML data and relational data. Recognizing this, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has developed XQuery as a uniform language for data exchange. In the same way that SQL provides a query language for relational databases, XQuery will provide a common language for accessing both XML and relational data stores. The promise XQuery brings to dramatically simplifying and accelerating data integration and querying XML is unprecedented. The emerging standard will revolutionize data exchange and the way applications are developed, deployed and utilized.

ADT: Focusing on XQuery

Focusing on XQuery

ADT's Peter Bochner talks about XQuery with DataDirect President, Rick Reidy: Rick Reidy likes to call DataDirect "the Switzerland of data access." The XQuery query language specification has become a focus of DataDirect's, Reidy says. This fall, the company will beta test a database-independent XQuery engine that integrates conventional relational databases with XML data sources using XQuery. XQuery adherents believe the language will change server-side programming as much as Java servlets did. XQuery is designed to query collections of XML data -- not just XML files, but anything that can appear as XML, including relational databases.

EWEEK: Stylus Studio® Has WYSIWYG View

Java Releases Ramp Up Productivity

Peter Coffee talks about XQuery with Jonathan Robie at JavaOne 2004: "Creating XML from relational databases is like report writing," said Jonathan Robie, XML program manager for DataDirect Technologies, of Bedford, Mass., while briefing eWEEK Labs at JavaOne. Records are best presented to people with HTML but best exchanged among processes with XML, Robie said. The flip side is that "XML data has hierarchy and sequence; relational data has neither," said Robie. Integrating data from these two worlds is a challenge developers would do well to start considering now because it's clear that most new projects will be XML-based but that legacy SQL data and established SQL skills will persist in the community for decades to come.
