alon rSubject: Dynamic xpath expression
Author: alon r
Date: 03 Sep 2005 05:01 PM
Hi,

I am using the document function in order to reference to an external xml document. I want to set a dynamic xpath for the document in a for-each loop and not a hardcoded one.

xml looks like that:<br>
<root>
<nodeset id="blabla">
<xpath>//Nodes[@name='node name']</xpath>
</nodset>
</root>

xsl I use contains the the following code:

<xsl:variable name="ExternalDocument" select="document('c:\test.xml')"/>

<template match="root">
<xsl:for-each select="$ExternalDocument/nodeset/xpath">
</template>

But the effect I want is not the xsl referring to the literal /nodeset/xpath, I want it to evaluate it and use the <xpath> node text as the xpath for the document.

10x.

XSLT doesn't support dynamic evalution so some implementations added a custom fuction for this purpose.

Here an example using Saxon 8.x

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<xsl:stylesheet version="1.0"
xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform"
xmlns:saxon="http://saxon.sf.net/"
exclude-result-prefixes="saxon">

<xsl:template match="/">
<xsl:variable name="xpath" select="document('dynamic-xpath.xml')/root/nodeset/xpath/text()"/>
<root>
<xsl:for-each select="saxon:evaluate($xpath)">
<xsl:copy-of select="."/>
</xsl:for-each>
</root>
</xsl:template>

</xsl:stylesheet>

Hope this helps
