Manikandan SurendranathSubject: How to get the position of a matching node
Author: Manikandan Surendranath

I am just starting some developments using XSLT. I need to get the position of a "Cell" node having value "FIRST_NAME". Below is the code I used to find the position. But I feel that there should be some easier way to do it instead of looping through nodes. Any ideas?

<xsl:variable name="iFIRST_NAME">
<xsl:for-each select="$class_roll/ss:Row[1]/ss:Cell">
<xsl:if test=".='FIRST_NAME'">
<xsl:value-of select="position()" />
</xsl:if>
</xsl:for-each>
</xsl:variable>

you can try counting the sibling nodes before 'FIRST_NAME' which should be the position of 'FIRST_NAME' node, but I'm not sure if this is something you consider as 'easier way'.

<xsl:variable name="iFIRST_NAME">
<xsl:value-of select="count($class_roll/ss:Row[1]/ss:Cell[.='FIRST_NAME']/preceding-sibling::*)" />
</xsl:variable>

It works thanks. I did not want to loop through the nodes, that's it.
