XQuery Expected to Reach Mainstream Adoption in 2-5 Years

XQuery is a query language and W3C standard designed to query collections of XML data. It combines features from XML Path Language (Xpath), Document Object Model (DOM), Structured Query Language (SQL) and Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformations (XSLT) to extract data from relational and XML-information sources offering a convergence of the Web and database worlds. Gartner places XQuery "At the Peak" of the hype cycle with less than one percent of target audience market penetration, predicting the technology will gain mainstream adoption within the next 2-5 years.

According to the Gartner report, "As XQuery solidifies as a standard and is incorporated into database management systems (DBMS) and the various tools that access them (such as business intelligence platforms), significant growth and adoption of XML storage and XQuery will begin."
