Tarek TarekSubject: fixed-width to XML
Author: Tarek Tarek

hi all,

i have a fixed-width textfile and i want to convert it to XML..
I have tried this with simple files where all the rows are the same and it works fine...

but now i have a textfile with diferent rows... so a parent row can have it's childs... but it is still a fixed-size file and not comma or anything else delimited...

for example:

#PARENT1 46890210
#CHILD12 E22 Q
#PARENT1 46890196
#CHILD12 E22 R
#PARENT1 46890179
#CHILD12 E22 R
#PARENT1 46890167
#CHILD12 E22 A
#PARENT1 46890150
#CHILD12 114 B
#PARENT1 46890108
#CHILD12 E22 R

In Convert-to-XML, you can have a different set of fields for each
row that matches a specific pattern.

For your example, you can have rows that match "#PARENT1" output one
set of XML elements, and those that match "#CHILD12" output another
set.

See the "Add Node and Pattern" option, which comes up when you
right-click on a row. It will pre-fill with a best guess at what
you are trying to match.

There is more information on using this feature in the on-line
documentation at
http://www.stylusstudio.com/docs/v62/d_flatfileconversion8.html#wp457979

the problem is... in fixed width mode, i can not define diffrent fixed/width settings per row-type...

in my example, in can't define diffrent row types for the #Parent1 and the #Child1..

and when i use the row-orietented-mode, i can't find any way to define my column.. because there is no delimiter between my columns..

Ah. Yes, currently that is true. It is on the to-do list, but
we don't have a date for that at this time.

If your sample file looked like the one above, you might be able
to use the line mode, and use '#' as the line ending, and ' ' as
the field separator.

oh. hope really that this will be avaible soon.

and about the ' ' seperator, I can't use it.. because in between some columns, i don't have seperators or empty space...

but still thanks for the fast reply and excelent service!

Hi, Tarek. Yes, Stylus Studio 6 Release 3 Professional Edition and Enterprise Edition both include the Convert to XML feature, which supports conversion of fixed-width files (and many other formats, like EDI and CSV) to XML. All versions of Stylus Studio provide a Fixed-Width to XML Document Wizard.

You can learn more about using the Convert to XML feature in

-- our video demonstrations, here:
http://www.stylusstudio.com/learn_convert_to_xml.html#converttoxml

-- the on-line documentation, here:
http://www.stylusstudio.com/docs/v62/d_flatfileconversion8.html#wp457979

The Fixed-Width to XML Document Wizard is described here:
http://www.stylusstudio.com/docs/v62/d_edit3.html#wp357658

Finally, searching SSDN and reading the Stylus Studio Web site can provide useful information for queries like this.

Hope this helps!

--- I will re-post my question to be clear

the problem is... in fixed width mode, i can not define diffrent fixed/width settings per row-type...

Sorry, but we do not yet support fields of different sizes by pattern
in fixed-width regions yet. There is a tentative plan to include that
in our next version, but it is not fully decided yet.
