xpath with predicate otherwise

Hi,
I have always wondered why I had to code the following construction:
<xsl:variable name="name" select="@name"/>
<xsl:apply-templates select="//*[@name=$name]"/>
Is there a xpath predicate expression in which I do not have to code a variable like above.
Hope you will understand the construct.
Kind regards
ad

><xsl:variable name="name" select="@name"/>
><xsl:apply-templates select="//*[@name=$name]"/>
Once you use any of the axis operators (including / and //)
you have changed your context. This is why you need to save
some clue as to your current context in a variable before
the selection.

HI,
But I always find it annoying.
Don't you agree?
Kind regards
