rule number 1 any ise of // is likely to be slow.

//DOCUMENT/HEAD/TITLE
will search the entire document looking for DOCUMENT elements

//TITLE
will search the entire document looking for TITLE elements

(/DOCUMENT/HEAD/TITLE)[1]

will tell the system to only find one TITLE element in that place.
the (..)[1] makes it less readable and the chance that it makes any
measurable difference in the time taken is rather small, but changing //
to / can make a huge difference.
