This has nothing to do with the // shorthand. If you give a node-set
in the select attribute of xsl:value-of, the text node that is created
will contain the string-value of the first node in the set.

If your current node has a couple of 'foo' element children, like:

 <foo>hi</foo>
 <foo>hello</foo>

then <xsl:value-of select="foo"/> will give you 'hi' only.
