Perhaps the above would be more succinctly written as:

   <xsl:template match="purchaseOrder/items/quantity">
     <quant><xsl:value-of select="."/></quant>
   </xsl:template>

Why do you say "without removing template"?  If you have 100 <quantity> 
children of <items> then you would get 100 reports of the total if you 
calculated the sum of all items when in the item's quantity.

Perhaps you are looking for the total of all quantity grandchildren when 
you are in the <purchaseOrder> element:

   <xsl:template match="purchaseOrder">
     <total><xsl:value-of select="sum(items/quantity)"/></total>
   </xsl:template>

I wonder if perhaps you are missing a level of the hierarchy ... should you 
have purchaseOrder/items/item/quantity as the levels of your 
information?  Is the quantity on a total of all items or on each item?
