AKA, Location dependant services. When looking into GML, I found a paper on that topic from a wireless vendor promoting the use of XML for exactly this sort of thing. I don't have the URL handy but it included ideas such as location relevance based on time (when an event starts, ends, etc), environment (is it hot today), resources (it is hot. do i have a coat?), an event occurs (bono is playing at the roxy), role of user (i am a tourist; where are the museums) and so on. Information is layered and can be layered into map displays (from XML restaurant db to SVG map). Give the system topics of interest for the day and an AVL/GPS system uses metadata to keep the layers of interest active. len -----Original Message----- From: Francis Norton [mailto:francis@r...] How about a really simple XML web service to query where a chain's nearest branch is? (+ phone, fax, URL and opening hours) - I can't think of any retail chain that *wouldn't* want to support this query...
