permanent keys
Speaking of this, I was a bit disappointed that
XML Schema keys were not designed to be attached to
the XML document a la permanent xsl:key-s .

They could be referenced in XPath expressions
and re-used in recurrent XSLT transformations
of the same XML Document
This would be very useful for example, when only
global XSLT parameters change whereas input XML document and
XSLT documents stay the same.
Thus XSLT processor would not have to rebuild key maps every time.

Am I missing something here?
