With the recent and past threads on all subjects touching XML,
this article from Ed Dumbill at

http://www.xml.com/pub/a/2001/10/24/selfishtag.html

interesting. He seems to have uncovered the objectivist
viewpoint on using standards. Ayn Rand would probably
approve of his "virtues of selfishness). :-)

There is no penalty for thinking critically. This attitude
toward the organizations, the documents, the webUberAll
movement is refreshing and sorely needed. Markup systems
are and despite the HTML blip that replicated genCoding,
have always been about ensuring the greatest possible
freedom for the information owner to determine how that
information will be handled. It is good to see such an
article from the XML community.
