Subject:File icons disappear for XML docs when associated to Stylus Studio Author:Marc Feickert Date:04 Apr 2006 10:31 AM
For some reason, my associated icons for XML files are broken when I have SS installed (see screen shot). If I change the file association to a new icon, it remains broken. This only happens for extension .xml. All other file types and associations will pick up their proper icons. Any suggestions?

You can check if .xml is associated to Stylus Studio in Tools > Options > File Types; if it is associated ("Open with Stylus Studio" is "true"), then it may just be a matter of "shaking" Explorer a bit... a restart usually takes care of it.

It's my work computer, so it gets rebooted daily. I also played with file associations in Explorer, going so far as to delete the xml file type and recreate it. Still nothing.
Since this computer contains a corporate image, I don't dsiscount the possibility that Windows is screwing up somewhere. However, I'm still interested to know if anyone found this problem and resolved it without reinstalling the vanilla OS.

Two possibilities: there could be an application which keeps
taking over the .xml extension and icon every time it sees that
it gets changed.
Or the Windows Explorer icon cache could be corrupted. The
Tweak UI powertoy from Microsoft includes an option to rebuild
the icon cache. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
But please be very careful using this tool. If you have an earlier
edition, uninstall it before installing the new one.

I have (had) the same problem. When editing File Types under Tools->Options in Stylus Studio 2007 XML Professional Suite, Release 2 (build 894m), it destroys the registry entries for that extension.
Registry key
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\stylusstudiofile.xml\shell\Edit with Stylus Studio\command
holds the incorrect value of
C:\PROGRA~1\STYLUS~1\binStruzzo.exe "%1"
where it should have been
C:\PROGRA~1\STYLUS~1\bin\Struzzo.exe "%1"
(note the extra \ between bin and Struzzo.exe).
Modifying the registry does the trick, until I use the Tools->Options->File Types again.
All file extensions have the same problem.
I am using Norwegian Windows XP Pro.

I solved it by uninstalling Stylus, then installing again.
A reinstall/repair did not work. Uninstall first, then install again.
Now, the path is correct - BUT: when using Tools->Options->File Types from within the program, the path is once again destroyed!
