Zsolt SzunyogSubject: Maxoccurs for nested elements
Author: Zsolt Szunyog

Hello,

I would like to express maximum occurence constraint for a nested element.
As I know maxoccurs relates to the immediate children element, but I want to
express maxoccurs contraint to grandchildren element.
Let's look at the following schema fragment:

<xsd:complexType name="grandchildren-t"/>

<xsd:complexType name="children-t">
<xsd:sequence maxOccurs="unbounded">
<xsd:element name="grandchildren" type="grandchildren-t"/>
</xsd:sequence>
</xsd:complexType>

<xsd:complexType name="parent-t">
<xsd:sequence maxOccurs="unbounded">
<xsd:element name="children" type="children-t"/>
</xsd:sequence>
</xsd:complexType>

For this schema the following XML is valid:
<parent>
<children>
<grandchildren/>
<grandchildren/>
</children>
<children>
<grandchildren/>
</children>
</parent>

I would like to express to have e.g maximum 10 occurence of grandchildren
elements under parent element independently under how many children element.
For example it could be 10 children element and under each children element exatcly
one grandchildren element, or one children element and under this element
maximum 10 grandchildren, or two children element and maximum sum 10
grandchildren element under these two children element ...

Is Schema capable to express such a constraint?

Thanks in advnace,
Zsolt

Hi Zsolt,
unfortunately XMLSchema doesn't have this feature; you need to turn to
different validators (Schematron, for example) or enforce this constraint
in your code.

Hope this helps,
Alberto
