Rodney BoydSubject: xsd:sequence question
Author: Rodney Boyd
Date: 16 Sep 2008 02:04 PM

Hi,

I think I must be missing something obvious here...I have the following schema ("testy.xsd"):

<xsd:schema xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema">

<xsd:element name="Procedures">
<xsd:complexType>
<xsd:sequence>
<xsd:element name="Procedure" minOccurs="1" maxOccurs="unbounded"/>
</xsd:sequence>
</xsd:complexType>
</xsd:element>

<xsd:element name="Procedure">
<xsd:complexType>
<xsd:sequence>
<xsd:element ref="PROCODE" minOccurs="0"/>
<xsd:element ref="PROCDATETM" minOccurs="0"/>
<xsd:element ref="DOSE" minOccurs="0"/>
<xsd:element ref="UNIT" minOccurs="0"/>
<xsd:element ref="ROUTE" minOccurs="0"/>
<xsd:element ref="CREWMNO" minOccurs="0"/>
</xsd:sequence>
</xsd:complexType>
</xsd:element>

<xsd:element name="PROCODE" type="xsd:string"/>
<xsd:element name="PROCDATETM" type="xsd:string"/>
<xsd:element name="DOSE" type="xsd:string"/>
<xsd:element name="UNIT" type="xsd:string"/>
<xsd:element name="ROUTE" type="xsd:string"/>
<xsd:element name="CREWMNO" type="xsd:string"/>

</xsd:schema>

and the following document:

<?xml version="1.0"?>

<Procedures xmlns:xsi= "http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation="testy.xsd">
<Procedure>
<PROCODE>370</PROCODE>
<PROCDATETM>2008/09/01 18:02</PROCDATETM>
<DOSE>300</DOSE>
<UNIT>02</UNIT>
<ROUTE>05</ROUTE>
<CREWMNO>1</CREWMNO>
<PROCODE>380</PROCODE>
<PROCDATETM>2008/09/01 18:03</PROCDATETM>
<CREWMNO>2</CREWMNO>
</Procedure>
</Procedures>

And the document validates in StylusStudio and with various other parsers. I thought that xsd:sequence would allow only one instance of PROCODE etc. and that the document should therefore be invalid. Does anyone have a clue as to what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks and regards,
Rodney Boyd

Hi Rodney,
the error is in

<xsd:element name="Procedure" minOccurs="1" maxOccurs="unbounded"/>

By using name="Procedure" you are defining a local element derived from xs:anyType, that can have any children. What you want to write is

<xsd:element ref="Procedure" minOccurs="1" maxOccurs="unbounded"/>

so that the global element is referenced.
