David WongSubject: EDIFACT to XML
Author: David Wong

I would like to translate a BAPILE 1.5 (EDIFACT Direc 91.1) to a XML file. Since this type of adapter does not exist, I am trying to use “Convert to XML” to create my own adapter. I found the output of the XML can only have three levels: Region, Field, Component and Sub Component

Let’s say I want to translate the following EDIFACT segment:
UNH+1+BAPLIE:1:911:UN:SMDG15'

To:
<MessageList>
<Message>
<Header>
<MessageHeader>
<MessageId>
<MessageTypeId>BAPLIE</MessageTypeId>
<MessageTypeRelNum>911</MessageTypeRelNum>

How can I do it? Should I use “Convert to XML” at the first place or I should use something else?

C2XML will not handle things to that level of detail on
its own.

What you could do is parse it out as rows to XML, and
then group the elements yourself into the structure you
want using XSLT - in a way similar to what we showed
another user in posting
http://www.stylusstudio.com/SSDN/default.asp?action=9&read=5617&fid=59#17086

A future version of the EDI adapter will allow you to
completely define your own EDI messages, which is what
you are really looking for I believe.
