I asked this question a few weeks ago, but I dont think I questioned it correctly to get the answer I was looking for.

if i have a peice of xml like the following..

<root>
<paths>
<path>/Name/first</path>
<path>/Name/Second</path>
</paths>
</root>

and another like the following
<root>
<Names>
<Name>
<first>mark</first>
<second>maltby</second>
</Name
<Name>
<first>joe</first>
<second>bloggs</second>
</Name
</Names
</root>

I would like to be able to use the path value from the first xml to get the values out of the second peice of xml.

so maybe something along the following...
<xsl:variable name="sPath" select="root/paths/path/Name/first"/>
<xsl:value of select="concat(root/Names,$sPath)"/>

I know this is not logically correct, but hopefully there is enough here for somehow to tell me if it is possible or not.

Many Thanks in advance

It's not possible the way you are trying to do it (in standard XPath); but it's possible leveraging the "local-name()" function and matching it agaist one part of the path at a time; something like:

<xsl:value-of select="root/Names/*[local-name() = $firstStep]/*[local-name() = $secondStep]"/>

...with $firstStep assigned to "Name" and $secondStep to "first", for example.
