I currently have a word document that needs to be converted into xml. The customer has supplied both templates, stylesheets and a dtd that we must use. I have converted the files using xmlspy by manipulating the customers templates and copying the information in. This works well until I run the files through the customers parsing tool. I am hoping to find a way to convert the word docs into xml and follow the customers dtd without having to start all over again.

You could use Convert-to-XML to build the mapping from the .txt
file to XML which is saved as a .conv file.
Then, use the XSLT Mapper. For the source file, choose the .txt
file, and select the checkbox that says 'open with adapter' and
choose the .conv file you built in step 1. For the target file,
choose your DTD. Now, build your XSLT mappings.
When you are done, you will have XSLT that can read from the .txt
file (converting it on-the-fly to XML), and then writing the
output to the DTD format you want. The online help at
http://www.stylusstudio.com/docs/v62/d_flatfileconversion10.html
and http://www.stylusstudio.com/docs/v62/d_xslt_xmlxml2.html can
help you.

Sounds like you need to script a solution. PHP and c++ have a wonderul command called sscanf that works well for this purpose. Depending on the field delimeter it is relatively trivial in most languages to parse a "flat" text file.

Another solution could be to use Microsoft's OLEDB provider for Text files that allows you to conntect to a Text file as if it were a database table. From there it is relatively trivial to loop through and ooutput XML or convert to XML using the SaveAs method and asXML and then ttransform the XML document to your format.

Oops, just caught your reply about using Word. You could write a COM-Add In and crawl through the Word Document Model (I'm doing this right now for a project and it is a pain in the butt). Or, you could Write a COM Add-In to save fhe file as filtered HTML, tidy the resulting HTML with HTMLTidy and use an external DOM crawler to convert the resulting document to the format you want. I've done this too and though it is easier you have a greater potential for error if the DTD/Schema doesn't allow for all the variations of Paragraph, image, table, cell, font formatting, etc/ that can happen as a result or if the Word Documents aren't really consistant. Think DocBook DTD.
