Frank-Ralph ReiserSubject: Built-In XSLT processor: variable definition mistake not reported
Author: Frank-Ralph Reiser

Howdy...

I just came across a strange behaviour of the build-in xslt processor of stylus studio.

The xslt structure similar to the following:
---
<xsl:for-each select="/report/customer">

<xsl:if test="count(accounts)>0">

<xsl:variable name="address" select="/report/address[@id = current()/@addr]"/>
[...]
</xsl:if>

<xsl:value-of select="$address/name"/>
</xsl:for-each>
---

As you can see, the variable "address" is defined inside the xsl:if, but accessed from outside.

Although should not be working, the build-in xslt processor of stylus studio doesn't bother.

Hi Frank,

What Stylus version are you running?

I tried with 5.1 173m and it seems to be working fine.
I modified the sampleBooksToCatalog.xsl like that

<xsl:stylesheet version="1.0"
xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform">
<xsl:template match="/">
<Catalog>
<Book>
<xsl:for-each select="books/book/title">
<Title>
<xsl:if test="true">
<xsl:variable name="a" select="."/>
<xsl:value-of select="."/>
</xsl:if>
<xsl:variable name="b" select="$a"/>
</Title>
</xsl:for-each>
</Book>
</Catalog>
</xsl:template>
</xsl:stylesheet>

When I execute I get

sampleBooksToCatalog.xsl (17, 7): Global variable "a" has not been
defined
