Erich KilmerSubject: How to debug a rendering error?
Author: Erich Kilmer

I am trying a new XSL style sheet but when I try to render it with FOP I get an error is there a log file or anywhere to give me more info to figure out what is wrong?
I just want to know how to figure this out? Where to look.
The output window says:
Post processing starting...
[INFO]: FOP 0.20.3
[INFO]: building formatting object tree
[ERROR]: null
...post processing finished

The XSL style sheet looks like this:

Header First

Header Rest

Footer First

Footer Rest

Content goes here!

Thanks,
Erich

Erich,
I don't know why FOP is not outputting useful error information in this
case; I tried running a custom post-processor asking for debug information
to FOP, and I didn't got much better information:

Post processing starting...
....
[INFO]: FOP 0.20.3
[DEBUG]: using SAX parser org.apache.xerces.parsers.SAXParser
[INFO]: building formatting object tree
[DEBUG]: setting up fonts
[ERROR]: null

at org.apache.fop.apps.CommandLineStarter.run(CommandLineStarter.java:72)
at org.apache.fop.apps.Fop.main(Fop.java:19)

---------

at org.apache.fop.apps.Fop.main(Fop.java:19)

I get better information running an older version of FOP (20.1):

Post processing starting...
FOP 0.20.1
using SAX parser org.apache.xerces.parsers.SAXParser
building formatting object tree
setting up fonts
WARNING: property 'master-reference' ignored
ERROR: 'master-name' for 'fo:page-sequence'matches no 'simple-page-master'
or 'page-sequence-master'
....post processing finished

Hope this helps,
Minollo

Thanks for your response.

Here is what I did to get it to work:

I changed the master-name attribute to master-reference inside the fo:conditional-page-master-reference tags and it renders properly.

I do not know why the FOP error aren't better either. Oh well. Thank you for looking at it!!!
