Bill ElswickSubject: X14 locks up, Unresponsive
Author: Bill Elswick

I just installed X14 and tried to open some old projects. This version locks up and becomes unresponsive while opening the projects, apparently while trying to resolve W3C URLs. For example, after I open Task Manager and try to kill the frozen Stylus Studio instance, I get a dialog box that says something like " Encountered an I/O error in URL http://www.w3c,ord/TR/2002/REC-xmldsig-core-20020212/xmldsig-core-schema.xsd".

If I say OK to that dialog, Stylus Sudion hangs again. Another "End Task" command gets me to a Windows "Not Responding" dialog, then Stylus goes all white, then another "End Task" command causes SS to display the file that I tried to open in the first place. But of course, the app instance is completely damaged at this point and I have to close it.

Is there an update to fix these lock-up bugs?

Thanks!

Bill,

It looks like that one for you documents is referring to a misspelled URL and Stylus Studio is trying to resolve a document that doesn't exist. If you wait enough time you will eventually get a time-out error.

Such URL

http://www.w3c,ord/TR/2002/REC-xmldsig-core-20020212/xmldsig-core-schema.xsd

is supposed to be

http://www.w3.org/TR/2002/REC-xmldsig-core-20020212/xmldsig-core-schema.xsd

I am sure that if fix the reference, Stylus Studio will open the project just fine

Hope this helps

Hi Ivan,

Thanks for your response. I had typoed the namespace name in my report. The document that I was trying to open had it spelled correctly. I'm guessing that the w3c was just taking a very long time to respond, or was completely down. I was just able to load the schema in a web browser - today, it took about 30 seconds for the web browser to get a response from w3c.org. But trying to validate a schema that uses that namespace basically hangs Stylus Studio for several minutes, and when it finally times out, I get 50 errors like this one (at various line in the schema):

"http://www.w3.org/2000/09/xmldsig#:115,78: non-whitespace characters are not allowed in schema declarations other than appinfo and documentation
Too many errors: validation canceled"

So it looks to as though the fetch is failing and returning "line noise" after it times out.

Another problem is that SS seems to be attempting to validate namespaces as I type them. So every few keystrokes, SS hangs for another few minutes.

So questions:
1. Is there some way to configure SS to not attempt to validate while I am typing?

2. Is there some way to shorten the timeout so that I can get control of the app back sooner?

3. Would I be better off just using local copies of all referenced schemas, and adding "import namespace" lines to my schemas to get them to validate locally?

Thanks Again,
--Bill

Stylus Studio attempts to import the schema definition if a schema location hint is present. The refresh interval is 10 seconds by default (Tools->Options->XML Editor->XML Settings).

I suggest looking at the OASIS catalogs, a clever method to bind namespace or DTD system ID to schema location.
