I'm sorry you landed in this mess. I think many of us have come up
against this kind of conflict, so you are not alone.

They are embarrassed and they don't know how to deal with it. They can
see that they were deceived by the previous developer because they
didn't know what they were doing any more than the dev did, but they're
too embarrassed to admit it.

The trick is to find them an opportunity where you can agree something
with them, and offer to fix it. But they need to believe in you first:
if there is still time to develop that trust, go for it; otherwise you
need to cut the job short, for your own sanity, and leave them to their
own devices.

I'm old enough and ugly enough nowadays to tell them up front that they
were taken for a ride and they need to admit it and move on, but that's
not really going to work if you depend on their employment.

When you are in the clear, this would make a wonderful case study.
