That's a good point!  I had not thought of head() in this context.

My inclination is that while

head(('','thing','widget'))

and

('','thing','widget')[1]

both return '', first-available(('','thing','widget')) ought to return 'thing', but I also feel my toes starting to extend out over an abyss.
