IIRC, Ken taught me to distinguish "push" and "pull". If you write
your stylesheet according to the structure of the result and use XSLT
statements to "pull" the meat between the bones you get what your
friend did. Otherwise, if you let the structure of the input control
the actions, you just depend on template matching, as you did.

In the case where both structures are very much the same, either way
is acceptable.

Regarding the extension: one source has
XSL  	XML Stylesheet
XSLT  	XSL Transform File

And Shakespeare wrote "What's in a name" ;-)
