You might probably  do both things:
    <xsl:value-of select="translate(translate(substring-after
		(//facsimile/surface[@n=$loop-variable]/@xml:id,
		'f_'),'_',' '),'_',' ')"/>
    <xsl:value-of select="translate(translate(substring-after
		(//facsimile/surface[@n=$loop-variable]/@xml:id,
		'p_'),'_',' '),'_',' ')"/>

P.S. Note that this is only an assumption.
