you can use all of xpath2 including if in xslt2, the idiom
(a,b)[1]
that I used in my reply may be equivalently written
if(exists(a)) then a[1] else b[1]
or if you know that a and b select at most one node, then
if(a) then a else b
if you prefer that kind of thing.
