But you can force the XSLT processor (or rather, its serializer) to output the character as a character reference by selecting an encoding that does not include the character, for example <xsl:output encoding="iso-8859-1"/> > To go with take a look at "LexEv" http://andrewjwelch.com/lexev/ It will take character references such as “ and wrap it in markup: <lexev:char-ref name="#x201C">"</lexev:char-ref> ...which you can then process in your transform (see the first sample http://andrewjwelch.com/lexev/#samples).
