you just combine the conditions with or (or and, but it seems from your
description that you want or) But you have used or in your sample code
already, so I'm confused.

variables always have a value, perhaps you masn that $lname is not ''
which you can test as

test="($lname='') or (some predicate involving $lname ...)">
