The code below didn't work....I am getting the same error:
The value of the "order" attribute may only be "ascending" or "descending".

Make that
   <xsl:sort select="*[name()=$order]" order="{$orderdirection}"/> that way
you use an attribute value template for the value of the order
attribute.
