following-sibling::node()[1][self::comment()] selects the following sibling node if it is a comment. If there's a whitespace text node in between the context node and the comment, following-sibling::node()[1] will be a text node, so nothing will be selected. So it's a good idea to get rid of whitespace text nodes using strip-space.
