So you apparently just want to test if all channel_object elements in a
document are siblings.

Which is to say you want to test if there is more than one parent of a
channel_object. So you don't need any recursive templates or variables
for that it's just

<xsl:variable name="morethanonenetwork"
 select="boolean((//channel_object/..)[2])"/>

wasn't the problem, see the list guidelines at the URL included at the
end of every message, which advise giving _short_ complete examples, and
stating what result you got and what result you wanted.
