Thanks, great, this clarifies the issue ideed.

Does someone know if any of the XSLT 1.0 processors has
adopted the additional cases 4) and 5) of section
4.2 Stripping Whitespace from the Stylesheet?
Is it considered best practice for those processors to strip
those additional whitespace text nodes, or do they have to
keep their hands away from this?
