Are you sure that your output is generated by this part of your code? I don't see how you can possibly get the content of references. Eiether id() succeeds in finding the referenced elements, in which case you for-each over them, or it doesn't in which case it returns the empty node set so you for-each over nothing and never evaluate the value-of at all.
