In your example it was a newline not a space so you probably want $ParentInfo//div/head[substring-before(normalize-space(.),'')=$strRoman]. Of course if your roman numerals are _always_ in a hi element as they are in your sample it's even easier, you don't need substring at all, just $ParentInfo//div/head[hi[1]=$strRoman].
