Odd, because I thought that the key() function itself would take care of the required string conversion stuff. It should. If (as here) you supply a node set with a single node as the 2nd argument of key() then the string value of that node is used to look up the key so string() should have no effect. If it does have an effect then that looks like a bug in the system.
