That depends of course what the previous experience of the coder is.
variables in declarative languages denote values rather than memory
locations, so they act in a natural way so long as you use variable with
its normal meaning rather than the somewat strained use of the term in
imperative programming languages where strange things like x=x+1 make
sense.

You want the sum of all the colspan attributes that have a numeric
attribute plus the number of th elements without such an attribute

select="
  sum(th/@colspan[number(.)=number(.)])
   +
  count(th[not(@colspan) or not(@colspan[number(.)=number(.)])])
  "
