Not trying to sum this thread, my learning point, partly answering
Jim's question do we need exslt function, seems to be

Mikes ($x castable as xs:XXX) either alone,
or in a <xsl:choose> within a function, returning whatever is appropriate
to the need.

That seems to fit the bill IMHO.
