But I'm not convinced by your _same_ ruling out my other
interpretation. Applying multiple transformations to the same document
does not imply serialising intermediate documents.

Nor can I see where you get this from - I can't find it in HTML 4.0,
and "Associating stylesheets ..." just says the same semantics.

I can see it as a suggestive argument, but still not decisive.
