In the expression count(ancestor::decisiontree_question=$stop_question) the argument to count() is a boolean, not a node-set. Perhaps you meant count(ancestor::decisiontree_question[.=$stop_question]) or perhaps not, since ancestor elements don't usually have a useful string value.
