Of course!! I forgot that wonderful trick of the null document() function that allows the program to see itself. If those old Zen masters had had XSLT they would not have been in such a lather about the the self seeing the self. Thank you very much indeed. The alternative solution to this problem is to have the search conditions supplied as a string (for example in a stylesheet parameter or a configuration file) and to use dyn:evaluate() to turn the string into an expression that you can evaluate.
