Use the identity template as your default template rule: <xsl:template match="*"> <xsl:copy> <xsl:copy-of select="@*"/> <xsl:apply-templates/> </xsl:copy> </xsl:template> and then supplement it with template rules like yours above that treat particular elements differently.
