RE: ancestor axis order

    no we're in ancestor axis step so [1] means nearer the ref element.

In which case I don't understand 

<xsl:when test="ancestor::*[self::define or
self::choice][1][self::choice]">

I've just tried it with

<doc>
  <define>
    <choice>
      <choice>
	<ref/>  <!-- true -->
      </choice>
    </choice>
    <ref/>  <!-- false -->
</define>
</doc>

and it works.

  <xsl:template match="ref">
    <xsl:choose>
      <xsl:when test=" ancestor::*[self::define or
self::choice][1][self::choice]"> 
      <xsl:message>
        true
      </xsl:message>
    </xsl:when>
    <xsl:otherwise>
      <xsl:message>
        false
      </xsl:message>
    </xsl:otherwise>
  </xsl:choose>
</xsl:template>

But I for one would appreciate a JT class explanation.
