...why do you need to use output method="text" and display the result in
an HTML browser?  It doesn't make sense...

You should at least have a minimal structure there, and then use <pre>
to render your text with linebreaks:

<html>
  <head>
    <meta ../>
  </head>
  <body>

    <pre>

    </pre>

  </body>
</html>
