RE: [numbering selected nodes]

<xsl:number level="any" count="ITEM[not(../TITLE="Raging River")]"
   format="w" ordinal="yes" lang="en"/>

(the last three attributes give you numbering in the form "first",
"second", "third" if you are using XSLT 2.0).
