How can I work out when Im in the first loop.

Your select= attribute defines the new current node list for processing in the loop.

The position() function reflects the position of the current node in the current node list.

So test="position()=1" will give you a true value for the first time in the loop.

My node set has a predicate on it

That doesn't affect position() ... it affects what is selected for the current node list, but once the list is selected, position() works for those that are selected.

I hope this helps.
